Welcome to the JPL Electronic Nose!

A Brief Introduction...

The JPL Electronic Nose (ENose) is designed as an event or incident monitor to provide rapid, early identification and quantification of changes in the atmosphere caused by leaks or spills of analytes (chemical species) to which it has been trained.

With minimal crew interfacing, the autonomous ENose Sensor Unit will monitor the quality of the recycled air in the ISS by continuously sampling air and documenting events where potentially trained-for chemical substances have been released...Learn More!

3rd Gen ENose

The Third Generation JPL Enose Sensor Unit

Volume ~820 cm3, Mass ~840 g.

A PDA, laptop computer or Interface Unit can be used to record and analyze data in real-time. The ENose Sensor Unit consists of an anodized aluminum chassis which houses the Sensor array and pneumatic system. Also contains the electronics to route power, relay data and commands between the Sensor array and the ENose Interface Unit. View Poster Presentation

3rd Gen ENose w/ Interface Unit

The ENose Interface Unit fully encloses and restrains the ENose Sensor Unit. The ENose Interface Unit receives power from the ISS EXPRESS Rack and converts the power from the ISS into specific voltages compatible with interface unit computer systems as well as the electronic and pneumatic systems of the ENose Sensor Unit.

The ISS computer system manages data collection from the ENose Sensor Unit and communication between the ISS and the ENose Unit. A data analysis computer will also be incorporated inside the ENose Interface Unit. The ENose Interface Unit will control the thermal environment of the ENose Sensor Unit.
